In the midst of the 2020 pandemic, we were approached by an enthusiastic follower of Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy with an intriguing request. They sought our expertise in designing a Waldorf School. A complex of educational buildings to house a day nursery and primary school, complete with cooking and dining facilities. The key focus of the Waldorf School design was to embody organic elements inspired by sacred geometry, while utilising natural and sustainable materials.

To fulfil this vision, we proposed the construction of two identical one-story nursery buildings. These structures, spanning 86 square meters each, were meticulously designed in the shape of a spiral. Featuring a spacious hallway, well-appointed classrooms, toilets, and a smaller dormitory. The walls of these buildings were planned to be constructed using prefabricated straw bale panels. Ensuring a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. Additionally, the roofs were envisioned with a central round lantern, creating a unique and captivating aesthetic.

For the primary school, we envisioned a fusion of two circular plans, resulting in a kidney-shaped structure. This 150 square meter building was intended to house an inviting entrance hall, two generously sized half-round classrooms, toilets, and a storage area for educational materials. The design further incorporated two conical roofs, elegantly merging into a single surface. Symbolising unity and cohesion.

Completing the complex was a rectangular kitchen/dining cottage. Designed to seamlessly integrate with the rest of the buildings using the same construction method. The spaces between the structures were thoughtfully planned as outdoor gardens and playgrounds. Providing ample room for children to engage in diverse outdoor activities, fostering their development and enjoyment.

Regrettably, due to financial complications, the project was placed on hold. However, we remain hopeful that these challenges will be resolved. Thus allowing us to bring this visionary educational complex to fruition.
