Eco Village

Moldova - Ecological Training Centre, Riscova, Republic of Moldov (2014-2016)

Project Journey

An Eco village prioritises self-sufficiency, sustainability, and a connection to nature, using eco-friendly construction materials and renewable energy. They offer an alternative living model that promotes sustainability, community, and connectedness.

Our collaboration with Eco Village Moldova began in the autumn of 2014 when we were invited to their headquarters as experts in natural building. Our initial task was to create the walls, both exterior and interior, for their first structure. Which had already been started with the floor post and beam structure and the roof in place. Within a week, we successfully built straw bale walls. Then we proceeded to apply earth plasters until the cold weather halted construction until the following spring.

When spring arrived, our collaboration resumed. The project expanded to include the construction of a larger passive community home, designed to accommodate two families and numerous guests. Over the winter, the structure was raised and the walls were filled with reed sourced from the nearby lake. Our responsibility was to oversee the construction of earthen floors with underfloor heating systems. Also, to apply exterior lime rendering, and create interior earth plasters. Additionally, we had the pleasure of finishing the first building, which later became classrooms. One of our proudest contributions was designing and building the eye-catching round mushroom-shaped thatched roof. This has since become a recognisable landmark of the village.

As the development of the site progressed over the years, our collaboration with Eco Village Moldova continued. We took great pride in leading the team of local workers and hosting several natural workshops to teach these techniques to anyone interested.
