Energy Efficient Country House
in Hunedora, Romania (2015)
Project Journey
Our customer, a retired energy engineer, approached Earth Safe Design with a unique request to design his dream, a super energy efficient country house. His retirement mountain home in a remote countryside location. With a clear vision in mind, he emphasised the importance of creating an exceptionally energy-efficient home. To achieve this, we incorporated an 80cm straw bale insulation in both the walls and roof. This ensures superior insulation throughout the house.
Innovatively, the floor was designed as a hybrid combination of a concrete slab, straw bale, and earth thermal mass. This experimental approach aimed to accumulate and retain heat within the house. Providing a comfortable living environment. To fulfil the heating requirements, we strategically placed a biomass heat generator in the basement. Ensuring a sustainable and efficient heating system.
For hot water circulation, we implemented a central thermal mass chimney that effectively transfers heat from the basement to both the ground and first floors. Furthermore, the entire house was designed to function off the grid. Utilising solar panels as the primary energy source for lighting and appliances. This sustainable approach aligns perfectly with our customer’s vision for an environmentally friendly home.
To add a personal touch, the owner decided to undertake the self-building process, resulting in a construction period spanning over three summers. However, we are pleased to inform you that the house is now nearing completion. With final works scheduled to be carried out this summer.
We are excited to witness the culmination of this grand project. And we are confident that the final result will exceed our customer’s expectations.
